What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues? Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance, just as we have found for the pre-historic circle of large vertical rocks known as Stonehenge, in the Salisbury Plain of England. For Stonehenge, the special day is the summer solstice, when the Sun rises in perfect alignment with several of the stones, signaling the change of season.

For Manhattan, a place where evening matters more than morning, that special day comes twice a year. For 2012 they fall on May 29th, and July 12th, when the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan’s brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough’s grid. A rare and beautiful sight.

This event gets more and more popular…when I took the above photo 3 years ago, there was already a crowd where I was an hour ahead of the event. I think I ended up just hopping in a cab and having him drive north and south for the event.

Sometimes going up and down pre-war walk-ups in SoHo day after day can wear a broker down. Then there are the days when I get the adventurous client who’d like to see the roof of their potential home. Like an urban sherpa I guide them up the final stairway that leads to a metallic door. The imposing door looks as if it belongs on a primal vault. Often I have to lean my shoulder into the door - it swings open in a screeching arc, announcing it’s climbers to the city. And there it is, in all its majesty, New York City. In this image I snapped with my phone you see the New Museum soaring above it’s pre-war neighbors, and if you look closely there is a lone figure, a lone climber, in a state of awe, I imagine.
